Easily one of the most talked about craft breweries in Connecticut is Black Hog Brewing Company. Opening up a little over a year ago, Black Hog is making some tasty flagships and great seasonal brews. We got a chance to spend a few days with them last month and had a great time. Enjoy the photos.
Partner and head brewer Tyler Jones mans the helm daily. The chemical engineer turned beer maker comes from a long list of brewing experience. He attended the Master Brewers program at UC Davis, in California. Made beer at Mercury in Massachusetts and worked his way through the ranks at Smuttynose and became head brewer of Portsmouth Brewery in New Hampshire.
Making 15 barrels at a time. Black Hog is keeping their tanks packed and slowly expanding markets around New England. Their beers can be found in CT, NY and soon Maine.
Assistant brewer, Justin Benvenuto milling in grains for one of their staples, Ginga Ninga.
Like most breweries. Black Hog is big on draft beer.
They also can their beer with Iron Heart and have developed quite the relationship.
They even teamed up to bring their fans a wet hop ipa called, Iron Hog. You can get the full scoop on that here.
Black Hog calls on local New Haven artist, Max Toth for their design. Check him out here. The art work on these cans is some of the best we have seen.
Most of the cans hit distribution but you can always get a fresh growler to go at the brewery. You can even get bottles of their funky side of things in a series they call, Disco Pig.
More awesome art from Max.
That about wraps things up here. Next time you find yourself in Oxford, Connecticut. Do yourself a favor and play Black Hog a visit. You won’t be disappointed by anything you taste. Thanks to Tyler for having us out, we can’t wait to come back for more good times and tasty beer. Cheers.
