It has been a while since we featured that can of Daisy Cutter, so we thought it would be proper to pay respect to another great beer from Half Acre Brewing (out of Chicago). This time we are featuring their hybrid beer Over Ale. Hybrid you say? That’s right – Over Ale lies somewhere between brown and ESB, and quite frankly is not for everyone.
The beer is very malty. After having my final can last night, I can confidently say this beer is fantastic. I don’t know if it was a mental thing, or the swiss rolls I was eating with it, but the beer just really stood out for me as one of the better brews I have had recently.
The can does not communicate much, and being very interested in the artwork I had to reach out to Half Acre to get more information about this beer. Who other than Half Acre’s own Gabriel Magliaro got back to us to tell the tale of this malty brown ale.
“Over Ale is a pretty strange beer. It’s a hybrid beer that straddles brown ale and ESB. It’s been an armchair beer that we’ve brewed for a while. It has loyal fans, but isn’t a beer for the frothing masses looking for the ultra big or hoppy beers. We appreciate its underdog spirit. We don’t communicate much of anything about the beer on the can or packaging, which is really strange for folks trying to sell something. As I said, it’s an oddball approach. So there it is…..” – Gabriel Magliaro
I enjoy this beer thoroughly, and I hope this post inspires you to find a can or a pint on draft if it’s within your reach. Over Ale is undoubtedly an intriguing beer and one of the better brews coming out of Chicago these days. Cheers to Half Acre for another home run.
