For those that aren’t familiar with the style. An Oud Bruin is a brown sour ale that orginated in the Flanders region of Belgium. They under go a lengthy aging process then can last up to a year, with the ending result being a tasty and slightly tart brown ale.
While they are no stranger to making sours, New Glarus has their own take on this style, and it is fantastic. Simple yet complex. This Oud Bruin uses a blend of local Wisconsin, British and German malts that spent a little bit of time in a cool ship. For a secondary fermentation, New Glarus let this beer finish on oak in their wild fruit cave. If that doesn’t get the sour geek in your going I don’t know what will.
This beer has already been out for a few months. We were lucky that Adam had a trip to Wisconsin, and was able to bring this and a few things back for us to taste, and of course write about. Find someone to trade with, or hit the cheese state because I imagine this one is going to be tough to come by otherwise. Cheers to New Glarus, we look forward to more sours from the Thumbprint Series.
