There seems to be a lot of beer makers producing the gose style these days. No matter what corner of the country you are in, you can most likely find one to drink. The once lost style has found a resurgence, especially with the sour geeks like ourselves. So when we had the chance to grab a bottle of Night Shifts take on the popular style, we jumped on it immediately.
We found Harborside to be pretty close to the classic example from Leipziger. Lots of coriander, a great salt profile and just the right amount of tartness. To get these flavors, Night Shift teamed up with Island Creek Oysters to add hundreds of pounds of the known molluscs to get some more salt and briney notes in the beer. The beer was then fermented with a blend of lactobacillus and ale yeast, which brought it all together to make a fantastic gose.
There is not much more to say about this beer other than we wish we had a stash of them. Night Shift really did a great job on this one and it’s a testament to their great beer making skills. Cheers to Joe and the gang, this was a job well done.
