A few weeks back I tagged along on a trip with Iron Heart Canning to a very rural location on the East side of Pennsylvania. Having many successful runs here, this would be the last canning, at the barn, as some would like to call it.
Now at capacity, Spring House is moving their brewery from the farm to the town, with plans to get more of their beer out to market and offer more to their loyal fans, whether it be local or far.
Back to the beer. Having made a small batch for their tap room, head brewer, Robbie Tarves decided it was time to make a batch and can some of it up. Using a heavy amount of zest in the boil, combined with a compressed oil that comes from the rinds, this beer screams GRAPEFRUIT!
Ice cold, the beer is extremely crushable, and the grapefruit shines through brilliantly not blowing out your palate. Let it warm and you are really smacked in the face with flavor. It’s like having a glass of Dole’s grapefruit juice, or taking a bite out of the fruit itself.
This beer is fantastic and it’s a great testament to what the gang at Spring House can do. For the grapefruit fans, and those that like interesting pales, this is most certainly a beer to seek out. Thanks to Matt, Rob, and everyone else at Spring House. We look forward to seeing the new digs later this year, and trying many other brews, cheers.
